Vestas Wind Makes Plans To Abandon Ship After Running Aground In The Indian Ocean.

Article by EnjoyBoats.com. Photo by Ainhoa Sanchez/Volvo Ocean Race
Volvo Ocean Race Team Vestas Wind informed Race Control that their boat was grounded on the Cargados Carajos Shoals, Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean today. Race Officials told us, "Fortunately, no one has been injured. We are in contact with the boat to establish the extent of the damage and ensure the crew is given the support needed to enable it to deal with the situation." Team Alvimedica has arrived at the site and is in radio contact with Team Vestas Wind. The plan is for this vessel to assist in abandoning the boat as soon as possible after daylight tomorrow. Both rudders were reported broken by the Team Vestas Wind crew. The team also reported water ingress in the stern compartment.

The Volvo Ocean 65 has watertight bulkheads in the bow and the stern. The remaining part of the boat is intact including the rig. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Reunion Island is aware of the problem and, if needed, there is a a coastguard station on Isle de Sud, approximately 1.5 km from the boat, which has a RIB available.

Boat Of The Day: Mulder 88 Flybridge

The Mulder 88 Flybridge offers The Best of Both Worlds in various ways. Firstly, she breaks fresh ground in terms of her performance at both ends of the cruising spectrum. A sturdy profile combined with an ingenious hull design offers excellent performance at slower, heavy-weather speeds. What truly sets the Mulder 88 Flybridge apart, however, is that she also has the ability to reach fast speeds of up to 27 knots. And her unique, newly developed round-bilged hull, built to Lloyd's specifications, guarantees you a superb trim and stability whatever speed you choose to cruise.

Below decks, the Mulder 88 Flybridge combines exclusive Dutch standards of luxury and comfort with the practical design and top-drawer facilities that you'd expect from a bluewater yacht. The interior can be fully customised to your requirements in terms of layout, functionality and styling. And you can also choose from a wide range of leisure and recreation options, depending on how active you prefer your sailing lifestyle.

The Mulder 88 Flybridge seen here has a traditional interior, with a wealth of cherrywood panelling. The main lounge is laid out for informal leisure and has a bright and breezy feel. To starboard lies an impressive cabinet: as well as storing glasswork, the giant plasma screen television drops down electronically into the back section when not in use. This TV forms part of a state-of-the-art audio/visual entertainment system.

With the owner's children frequently on board, the interior has been optimised for safety, with every edge rounded off on the furniture, walls and panels. Classic furniture is matched with nautical fabrics and upholstery. Other highlights include the use of rich blue and cream carpets, and the Alcantara fabric ceiling panels.

Made of cherrywood, the dining table is flanked on two sides by built-in benches. The galley is well equipped, while the wheelhouse includes a blue leather observation sofa and pilot's seat, plus the latest navigation and communication equipment.

The full-beam owner's stateroom is luxurious and cosy in equal measure. The rich red tones of the fabrics on the four-poster bed are matched by the cushions on an inviting portside sofa. Opposite the sofa is a dedicated study area. A walk-in changing area is located aft on the port side, complete with three large wardrobes and  a full-length mirror.

The rest of the beam is taken up by the owners bathroom, complete with bath, separate shower and double sink. A superb oil painting mural surrounds three sides of the bath. A connecting door forward leads to the small children's room, containing two cot-type beds with railings and a nappy changing facility to starboard. Of course you can customise your layout anyway you choose. For example, you can put in a door to starboard, turning this space into a separate, self-contained guest cabin.

Meanwhile, there is still room for two other guest cabins: on this Mulder 88 Flybridge, the owner opted for a VIP with double bed and a cabin with twins. Good-quality accommodation for three crew is found aft on the lower deck.

The state-of-the-art technology for which the Mulder yard is famed is seen throughout. Sound and vibration levels are exceptionally low, and all the equipment used for air-conditioning, decks, doors and the like is of the finest standard available. The piping, cabling and other technical aspects have all been discretely incorporated to the highest standard.

You have a wide choice of al fresco facilities on the Mulder 88 Flybridge. Complete with outside bar and seating for eight, the aft deck can be completely enclosed by a canvas windowed awning. Leave the sliding door open to create one extended main deck, a far larger relaxation area than you would expect on a yacht of this size.

The flybridge deck is a magnificent spot, with a whirlpool, loungers, a dining table for eight, light cooking facilities, a wet bar and easily enough space to house a wave-runner and other watersports toys. The helm position on this deck offers you both complete control of the yacht plus magnificent views.

Although the Mulder 88 Flybridge equals the performance of explorer-type vessels in rough seas, her graceful profile ensures both the speed and looks of a luxury yacht. Long sleek lines encompass classic themes such as a flared bow, slanted wheelhouse windows and fashion plates. There are modern features too: the aft deck design, the shape and setting of the window groups, and the continuous black stripe. An optional blue hull gives a speedy look, while the long nose reflects a mix of design and functionality, with the tender storage being in the foredeck. The tender itself is covered by an hydraulic hatch and launched by hydraulic crane. source and photos by Mulder to learn more Click Here

Boat Of The Day: Zeelander Z164 Luxury Explorer

The pursuit of perfection and the highest quality are common goals in the yacht development industry. Zeelander takes this quest one step further with an integrated design approach which is evident in all the yachts it has developed. The factors of engineering, style, timeless design, unusually quiet operation while running at speed, minimal maintenance and long range capacity are all incorporated, while construction with lasting, quality materials with superior finishes, low cost of ownership, a high level of customization and especially the smoothness of the ride are all solidly aligned. Everything is geared towards the ultimate wish to deliver a yacht of superior sailing capacities, featuring ease of operation and stylish comfort. Built to satisfy demanding owners, the Z164 Luxury Explorer provides a superior travel experience from every perspective.

Designed for use
Zeelander yachts are Dutch-designed with the owner, his family and guests as well as the crew in mind. Balanced in perfect harmony, the typical Dutch design features of functionality, fun and comfort are combined to ensure all the yacht’s operations interact and work like clockwork. For interior style and comfort, the luxurious interior lounges with incredible views and the optimized space usage will be appreciated by all on board. Owner and guest cabins will also attract attention, due to their generous size and location on the lower deck, near the sea level and therefore providing a more stable rest. A large and luxurious galley, equipped with a country kitchen’s seating arrangement, ensures that all aboard will be able to enjoy nourishing, tasty food. The lazarette, when not in use as a gym or pool basin, is capable of carrying an amazing array of personal watercraft, amphibian vehicles and aircraft, cars or three seater submersibles. When anchoring is not possible due to adverse or fragile marine environments, dynamic positioning equipment allows for exploration of the submarine world.

Designed to explore
Exploring off the beaten track often requires independent means of transportation from the yacht to the shore and on the land. Depending on the terrain and itinerary, appropriate equipment can be immediately to hand, ranging from amphibian aircraft to view tropical islands from the air, hovercraft or amphibian quadskis to explore America’s coastal salt marshes or drive your favorite car to the Peak in Hong Kong. For owners exploring the globe, the convenience of keeping toys and tenders aboard opens up a raft of new experiences. Owners will also appreciate the long range capacity and fuel economy, low costs of daily operations and the reduced maintenance costs of the Z164. Captains and crew members will be convinced by the handling in all seas, the high standard of equipment and controls, the innovative electric propulsion system, the level of crew facilities aboard and overall operational efficiency.

Nordhavn announces expansion, relocation of its Southeast operations

In an effort to better service its customers on the East Coast, Pacific Asian Enterprises, Inc. (PAE) is extremely pleased to announce the expansion and relocation of its southeast sales and commissioning operations to North Palm Beach, FL. The highly regarded Old Port Cove Marina will serve as the new home base for Nordhavn Yachts Southeast, providing clients a one-stop shop for superior sales, service and yacht management.

Further development of Nordhavn Southeast was initially triggered by the company having outgrown its Stuart, FL location after facing an influx of service demand from larger Nordhavns. At the same time, PAE wanted to refocus its efforts on improving strategies to address client needs by offering the most competitive professional and technical service.

“Clients have been asking for increased manufacturer support in our area for years,” says Southeast Sales Manager Andy Hegley who oversees operations. “We are excited to now be in a position to offer the best possible services to them.”

To start, the company has named Rob Cole as the new Southeast Service Manager. Cole, an experienced commissioning tech, has worked on dozens of Nordhavns across the globe during his 10-year tenure with PAE. Having serviced every model in the line (both 50- and 60-cycle boats), performed countless deliveries, and built long-term client relationships, Cole has established himself as one of the pre-eminent and sought after Nordhavn technicians in the world today.

Cole has a solid team around him, including Chris Cooper, another long-time commissioning member who has served alongside Cole the past 6 years and knows Nordhavns from stem to stern. Together, they have proven a trustworthy, results-driven tandem whose single most important goal is providing the best service on each job they take. Already up and running in North Palm Beach, Cole and Cooper have started on several work orders and will tackle commissioning the brand new Nordhavn 68 hull 29 in January.

With its established, ethical and successful service track record as a foundation, Nordhavn Yachts Southeast is also offering yacht management services for Nordhavns laying over anywhere in the area. Owners are provided support via a dedicated team of Nordhavn professionals who ensures each yacht is maintained, operated and administered to the highest possible standards. “Our aim is to give owners peace of mind whether or not they’re on board,” said Hegley. Those owners who do opt to stay aboard while at Old Port Cove can enjoy the amenities the marina has to offer. The facility caters to boaters with its deep water entry, easy ocean accessibility and the sort of first class conveniences that Nordhavn owners have a right to expect. It’s a short drive from Palm Beach airport and within close proximity to a multitude of shops and restaurants.

In addition to being an ideal backdrop for expert yacht maintenance and care, Hegley is enthused about the increased visibility the Old Port Cove site (an already established hub for Nordhavns) will provide the sales arm of Nordhavn Yachts Southeast. A third broker was recently added to the sales force in anticipation of meeting increased demands. With a recovering economy and a location that has always been a draw for Nordhavns, Hegley foresees a bright and busy future in both the new and pre-owned markets. “The combined amount of professional yacht sales experience in the Florida office now is nearly 75 years – that’s an immense skillset,” said Hegley. “When you add to that our direct connection to Nordhavn engineering and project management coupled with the services we can now offer anyone looking to buy or sell a Nordhavn, it positions us as the most viable option for customers in this region.”

Some of the advantages clientele can look forward to include discounted dockage, preventative inspections, owner’s manual updates, and manufacturer-direct parts orders.

“No other firm will be able to offer a more professional, high level and comprehensive package of services at a greater value than Nordhavn Yachts Southeast,” asserts Hegley.
